 BLACK OUT! At Occupy Philadelphia

We had a Black Out! at Occupy Philadelphia. Why?

Saturday,  two sisters were called Niggers by two of the volunteers at Occupy Philadelphia at the cell-phone charging stations.  They were also told to go back to Africa, and that each white man should own a slave. When the sista’s called security, security asked them to leave the premises because they thought they were apart of the UHURU movement.  Even if they were a part of that movement, they should not have been asked to leave without any mention of their verbal and spiritual abuse.

So a small collective formed a drummer’s circle and started a rally, only to be met with on-lookers who didn’t understand why there was a Pan-African flag at an “American” event. We were called racist.  People kept coming to us to tell us that all of us are people and that race is behind us!

Bullshit.

When we wanted to address the people at the people’s assembly, we had to beg to get a spot on the program. They kept asking us if we were going to be violent.  We eventually told the gate-keepers that we were going to be given the mic, or we were going to take the mic. We eventually got our spot.

As the sister was talking about her experience, there were some members in support - but many of the people were asking us to hurry up and finish, one guy using signals to get us to hurry up.

We spoke out about RACISM IN THE 99 percent.

We spoke out about how nobody was taking about the racist foundation of corporate greed.

How do we talk about classim without taking about racism?

We were called racist because we empowered ourselves and stood up for what was right.

Woah, what the fuck, OccPhilly? So much fail. I’m glad these folks took the stage but it’s fucked up that they had to deal with such racist fucking bullshit.

There is a lot of fucked up shit going on in this movement but no one will really listen to me about it, ie white privilege, class privilege, and the colonialist usage of the movement itself: “occupy.”

I feel fighting the good fight against corporatocracy is much more important than bringing up defects in the movement itself. You don’t pick a fight then break a few of your fingers do you? Also, the African flag actually DOESN’T belong. They are African-Americans. All this nonsense about African this or that is what leads to more racism. Look up the true definition by the way. Both sides are guilty now.

And what exactly is white/class privilege supposedly mean?

Number one reason the majority of liberal movements fail miserably: infighting like this.

But they like it, for real.” “If she’s wearing short shorts, booty shorts, short skirt, with the thong showing, she wants it,” another guy says. “Can’t blame it on the boy. She knows what she’s doing.

 “But what if it’s hot out?” This is Kedrick Griffin. He’s here to play the 37-year-old devil’s advocate on a subject that’s generally considered normal behavior for a teenage boy in the District of Columbia. This exercise has come almost at the end of a year-long District program called the “Men of Strength” club—MOST Club, for short. The same pattern is repeated with groups of boys in public middle and high schools across the District: Come for the pizza, stay for the deconstructions of masculinity.

it is so so so important that people are doing this. i’m grateful to all programs like this.
